Mount Desert Summer Chorale

How to Join

The Mount Desert Summer Chorale is a 60+ voice choir that prepares a major work during 6 weeks or so each summer on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Performances are during the first weekend in August, with high-caliber visiting soloists and accompanied by an excellent chamber orchestra, playing typically to an enthusiastic house. Our director is top notch and fun to work with. If this sounds like fun to you, and you are comfortable singing major classical works, please consider joining us!

Membership in the Mount Desert Summer Chorale is open to all interested, experienced singers. There is no audition, but the choir does prepare a major work in 9 rehearsals, so members should be prepared to spend time on the music outside of rehearsals.

Special notes for 2008       Registration form

Dear singers and friends,

Our fortieth anniversary is at hand! It's time to sign up for the exciting program we have planned to celebrate MDSC's birthday in style. Even if you haven't sung with the Chorale recently, you won't want to miss this summer—and please encourage your friends to join as well (here's our invitation letter in case you'd like to print it and pass along to people you know).

Our featured work this summer is the Brahms Requiem. We'll open the program with two short celebratory pieces: Bach's A Mighty Fortress (arranged by Walter Damrosch—David's great, great uncle, I believe) and the Hallelujah from Beethoven's Christ on the Mount of Olives. As a special treat, George Emlen will conduct the Beethoven! Carole FitzPatrick, who sang the Mozart so beautifully two summers ago, will be the soprano for the Brahms. The baritone is another of my wonderful colleagues, Robert Barefield.

When you register, you will receive a specially-prepared score of the three works. You'll also receive a study CD of the Brahms with your part highlighted to assist you in practice. I'm working on a resource to help you with the German as well—more about that later. Up to June 1, the cost of dues, the score, and the CD will total $45. After June 1, the cost is $50. Please don't delay! Billie Lear will get your score and CD in the mail to you as soon as she receives your enrollment check made out to MDSC.
